Christmas. Is. Coming.

Christmas is coming and it’s time to make room. (And for the few ill-judged, but well-meaning, gifts we always seem to get.) So here we look at a few ways to streamline your storage areas and start the new year with cupboards that are easer to find things in (and easier to close).

Be practical. Be ruthless.

When was the last time you wore that jacket? Or wore those shoes? If you’re holding onto things that are only taking up space, get rid of them. Go through cupboards. Empty wardrobes. Go through drawers. And see what you can do without.

Give things away. It’s Christmas.

Charity shops rely on people donating things that are either unwanted or no longer used. Ones man’s trash is another man’s treasure, as the saying goes. There are lots of great charities doing amazing things in communities across Scotland. You’ll be amazed at the number of local groups making a real difference just around the corner from you. So find something you care about. And make their Christmas dreams come true by donating the things you can do without.

It’s Christmas. We could all do with a few more quid.

If you’d rather generate some money for buying presents for the upcoming festivities, you could use an online marketplace to sell whatever you’re no longer needing. There are number to choose from – Mr Google can help you find the best of them. Two of the most popular are eBay and Gumtree.

Which one’s right for your sales?

The short answer is: it depends. eBay offers a larger potential audience for your sales. They have robust procedures in place to ensure that you’re protected, backed by a ratings system and their own guarantee. The cost of the eyes of all these shoppers and the in-built safety? Well, there’s a fee to pay for anything you sell on eBay. There’s a sliding scale percentage of the final sale price that goes to eBay. Here’s what their website has on their fees.

Gumtree on the other hand is free. And it generally tends to be more of a local audience. So you might want to think about selling large or heavy items on Gumtree, to save on enormous shipping fees. And, because it’s free, you can also just advertise items to see if there’s a buyer for them, without having to pay for the privilege.

Declutter without actually getting rid of anything

If you just can’t bear to be parted from any of your possessions, we’ve still got the perfect solution for you. It could be your wedding dress, clothes from when your kids were small, a collection of LPs you no longer play, or crockery handed down through the family. Whatever you love, but don’t need every day, we can offer storage that looks after it as well as you would. Our secure premises offer a simple, modern way to keep what you love, but at arm’s length.

GTW Storage – perfect storage for you

We offer 7-day access, drive-in facilities, moving equipment, state-of-the-art security and fire precaution, deliveries and collections, customer parking and staff who know what they’re doing. They’re all there to help you, whatever you need. Find out more about our storage options, including how much space you’ll need and prices, here.

New year. New you.

So go on, start the clear out. You’ll be delighted you did once Christmas comes. And so will some charities or your bank manager, depending on your chosen method of decluttering. Get your storage sorted, then start to really enjoy the festivities. And start the new year in a home that’s not fit to burst.
