You are here: Home / Life Hacks / How bad storing facilities can affect your furniture

26th August 2019 By Jane Ritchie

We are all guilty of trying to save our pennies when we’re moving home…a big expense as it is. One thing you don’t want to do on the cheap however, is organise storing facilities. Bad storage can cause catastrophic results for your prized possessions, which can end up costing you money, time and effort.

1- Wooden Furniture.

If your wooden furniture isn’t stored properly then this can leave your home staples looking rather worse for wear. If wood is exposed to too much moisture, over time it can cause cracks or at worse even rot- meaning that your beloved dining room table and chairs might not see another Christmas dinner.

2- Leather Furniture.

Leather goods are another furniture item that can be easily affected by bad storage. If your storage container lets in any moisture and your leather sofa becomes damp, the oils in the leather bind to the water molecules. As the water dries and evaporates, it draws out the oils with it. The leather’s loss of natural oils causes it to lose its supple quality and turn brittle- not what you are wanting in your brand spanking new home.

Similarly, prolonged exposure to heat will dry and crack leather. Heat causes steam and water vapour to develop within the leather, attacking the leather fibres. Once the leather cools, it will become brittle and hardened.

Hot or cold- your sofa wont stand the test of time so it’s even more important that your leather furniture is stored correctly.

3- Household Appliances

Every day appliances such as washers and dryers, dishwashers, ovens, microwaves, and refrigerators need to be stored properly in order to preserve their shelf life.

Before moving your appliances into storage, they should be thoroughly cleaned and dried (as well as removing the water hoses) to protect the electronic and mechanical parts from cracking and rust that could cause permanent damage. Properly stored appliances can stop mold and mildew from building up inside appliances, too.
