You are here: Home / News / Self-Storage Tips – 7 Ways to Stay Organised When Renovating

7th April 2016 By Sarah Currie

When undertaking a renovation project, it’s difficult enough to stay sane, let alone organised. Even seemingly simple renovations can leave the most zen-like person tearing their hair out, especially if they haven’t planned the process in advance.

If you’re about to embark on a renovation project, here’s some key tips to ensure things run smoothly.

Seven Ways to Stay Organised While Renovating

  1. Create a project folder.

Before you laugh out loud, hear us out. A project folder may seem a little geeky, but it’s a wonderful way to collate ideas, gather contact details for suppliers, keep invoices, and generally stay on top of things. Put it like this, it’s a lot simpler than having a huge stress-out because you can’t find the tiling company’s number and have no idea how much they’re charging you!

  1. Get a schedule.

Have you got a diary? If not, now is the time to invest in one, pronto! A diary will help you to plan out your renovation, and it will also ensure you don’t forget any key dates (like letting the builders in when they’re waiting outside in the rain).

  1. Get a self-storage unit.

If you haven’t undertaken a renovation project before, here’s some news for you. Everything gets covered in dust. Even after you cover your belongings in super-thick tarpaulin, the dust still seems to manage to creep underneath, leaving you with a major cleaning headache afterwards. Save yourself the bother, and create valuable space for your builders, by moving belongings into self-storage units. You can generally rent units on a monthly or even weekly basis, which makes life considerably easier.

  1. Don’t push yourself.

Renovations take a lot of time and energy, and it’s important to acknowledge this and not push yourself too hard. The kids won’t suffer if they miss a few football sessions, your dog will survive if it doesn’t have a walk this Tuesday, and it’s not the end of the world if you don’t get to visit your Aunty Ethel. She’ll understand, trust us.

  1. Know what you want.

Indecision only adds to the stress of a renovation project. When your decorator asks you what shade of paint you want on the walls, make sure you have an answer ready. Know what tiles you’re having, what varnish you’re using on the floorboards, and which kitchen unit style you want – this will ensure that the project continues to run smoothly.

  1. Pre-order.

Remember, some items will take longer to deliver than others, and you don’t want to hold the builders up whilst your bespoke quartz kitchen counter is being painstakingly created! When phoning for quotes, ask what the lead-times are, and when you can expect to receive the items.

  1. Coordinate contractors.

Be realistic about how much space and time each of your contracted workers will need. For example, booking someone in to paint your lounge whilst simultaneously hiring someone to plaster your ceiling is a sure-fire recipe for disaster! If in doubt, ask your contractors for their expert opinions.
